Fact Check: Viral Claim of Baby Kidnapping at Penang Hospital Proven False

Viral Video Claims Baby Kidnapped at Penang Hospital

A video went viral online showing a group of people allegedly being stopped from entering Hospital Pulau Pinang (HPP) after claims surfaced that the hospital had gone into lockdown due to a baby kidnapping incident.

The clip, which was circulated widely on social media platforms, sparked panic among viewers. The #UpdateInfo X page (formerly Twitter) also shared the video, stating that “Hospital Pulau Pinang is said to have a case of a baby being kidnapped in the hospital,” leaving many feeling alarmed.

However, police have since confirmed that no kidnapping took place.

What Really Happened

According to authorities, the situation at the hospital was simply a routine emergency training exercise, not a real-life abduction.

The Timur Laut District Deputy Chief of Police, Superintendent Lee Swee Sake, clarified that the incident, which occurred at around 3 PM, was part of the hospital’s annual emergency preparedness drill to test how staff would respond to potential crises.

“The hospital conducts annual training to ensure that all staff are prepared and know the actions to be taken if an actual incident occurs,” he explained.

Police Urge Public to Stop Spreading False Information

Superintendent Lee also reminded the public not to spread unverified videos or posts related to the incident, as doing so could cause unnecessary panic or confusion.

“The public is asked to refer to authentic information from the authorities and not make any speculation that could affect public order,” he added.

Authorities further advised Malaysians to always verify news from official sources before sharing it online, especially when it concerns sensitive situations like hospital emergencies or public safety.

Public Reaction

While many users initially expressed concern and confusion over the alleged kidnapping, several have since thanked the police for their quick clarification. Some also criticized how easily misinformation spreads on social media without proper fact-checking.

The incident serves as a reminder to pause and verify before sharing, especially when viral posts could create fear among the public..
