Korean Family Sings Merdeka Song, Daughters Have Lived In Malaysia Almost Their Whole Lives
35, 19 And 17 Years In Malaysia
A Korean family has caught Malaysiansâ attention with a simple Merdeka reel featuring traditional Malay attire, one acoustic guitar and a familiar patriotic song. The video showed a father and his two daughters singing âSatu Malaysiaâ together, with the caption saying, âWe love Merdeka song (SATU MALAYSIA).â The trio runs an Instagram page called SUHA, and their reel has since collected around 57,500 likes. However, one detail on the screen left at least one viewer confused. Each family member had a number beside them: 35, 19 and 17. Those numbers represented how many years they had lived in Malaysia, not their ages. One commenter even asked whether the father was really 35 years old, prompting one of the daughters to clarify that he had actually lived in Malaysia for 35 years.
Malaysia Is Basically Home For The Two Daughters
The story behind the reel goes much further than simply a Korean family singing a Malaysian song. Neither daughter was born here, but the elder daughter, known online as Susu, arrived from South Korea in 2007 before she was even three months old. Since then, she has called several parts of Malaysia home. Susu has lived in Kota Kinabalu, Kuala Lumpur, Klang and Johor Bahru. She moved to Johor Bahru while she was still in primary school and continues to live there today. Now 19, she has spent almost her entire life in Malaysia. Her younger sisterâs 17-year figure also shows that Malaysia has been part of her life for nearly as long. So while the family may be Korean, the two girls have grown up with Malaysia as a huge part of their everyday lives.
And Susu Doesnât Plan On Leaving
Susu has also shared that her mother wants her to return to South Korea for university. However, Susu has expressed a very different plan for her future. She has said that she wants to remain in Malaysia permanently. That gives the familyâs viral Merdeka performance a little more meaning than what viewers might notice from the reel alone. For Susu, Malaysia isnât simply another country where her family happens to live. Itâs the place where she grew up, went to school and spent almost every year of her life. With Malaysia celebrating its 69th National Day on 31 August, their simple rendition of a Merdeka song has now become a surprisingly personal story about what it means to call somewhere home.
