Micron Offered Workers Up To 68 Months’ Salary In Bonuses — They’re Asking For 83
Hundreds of Micron workers in Taiwan have rallied after rejecting a compensation package worth between 35 and 68 months of salary for fiscal year 2026. Two unions representing nearly 12,000 employees are demanding a one-off bonus equivalent to 83 months’ salary, alongside a permanent system that distributes 15% of the company’s operating profit every quarter.
Why Are Workers Rejecting A Bonus Worth Up To 68 Months’ Salary?
Getting a bonus worth several years of salary sounds like the kind of announcement most workers would celebrate, but some Micron employees in Taiwan see things differently. The US memory chip giant offered a fiscal 2026 compensation package worth between 35 and 68 months of salary, with minimum cash compensation valued at NT$1.7 million, or roughly US$53,200. However, two unions representing nearly 12,000 of Micron’s 15,000 workers at its Taoyuan and Taichung facilities rejected the offer. Hundreds gathered near the Taoyuan plant to push for a one-off bonus equivalent to 83 months of salary instead. The unions are also asking for something longer term: a permanent system that would distribute 15% of Micron’s operating profit to workers every quarter.
Workers Say Their Contribution Should Match Micron’s AI-Era Growth
The size of the demand makes more sense when viewed against Micron’s position in Taiwan and the current AI-driven semiconductor boom. According to the report, around 50% to 60% of Micron’s memory chips are produced in Taiwan, making its local workforce an important part of the company’s global operations. The company also recorded revenue of US$41.5 billion for the quarter ending in May, according to the report. Workers argue that compensation should better reflect that performance and have pointed towards competitors in the semiconductor industry. Samsung Electronics, for example, recently avoided a worker strike in South Korea after agreeing to distribute bonuses equivalent to 10.5% of operating profit to employees in its semiconductor division. For Micron’s unions, the dispute therefore goes beyond one unusually large bonus — they want employees to receive a more consistent share when the company performs strongly.
A Strike Could Follow If Both Sides Fail To Reach A Deal
The dispute is particularly significant because it comes while memory chip manufacturers are racing to meet demand linked to artificial intelligence. Counterpoint Research analyst Neil Shah told the source cited by The Vocket that production capacity remains a major constraint, making Micron’s Taiwan workforce especially important as the company competes with Samsung and SK Hynix. For now, discussions between Micron management and the unions are continuing with government mediation. The unions have warned that they are prepared to strike if negotiations fail, potentially putting additional pressure on a major semiconductor manufacturing hub. So while “68 months of salary” sounds extraordinary on its own, the workers’ argument is centred on how much of Micron’s rising profits should flow back to the people producing its chips.
