A lorry loaded with cabbages had a rough day at the border when it was turned back to Singapore after inspectors discovered something creepy crawling in the cargo.

Pests Found in Cabbages During Routine Check

The drama unfolded at the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex in Johor, where a routine inspection by the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (MAQIS) uncovered a nasty surprise—live flea beetles hitching a ride on the cabbages. The load, consisting of 216 boxes of cabbages worth RM6,800 and weighing a whopping 2,160kg, was promptly halted.

MAQIS Takes No Chances with Contaminated Produce

Johor MAQIS director Edie Putra Md Yusof didn’t mince words, stating that importing agricultural goods contaminated with pests or diseases is a big no-no. It’s a serious offense under Section 14(a) of the MAQIS Act 2011, which could see offenders facing fines up to RM100,000, six years behind bars, or both.

Cabbages Sent Back, No Second Chances

But before you think these cabbages are heading to a local market near you, think again. The entire shipment was denied entry and told to make a U-turn back to Singapore.

Protecting Malaysia’s Food Security

Edie Putra assured that MAQIS would continue to be on high alert, keeping a close watch on all entry points to ensure that Malaysia’s food supply stays safe from unwanted pests and diseases.

So, the next time you pick up a cabbage, just remember—it’s gone through quite the ordeal to make it to your plate!
