DBKU Issues Stern Reminder On Viral Photo Trend

DBKU Warns Malaysians: RM1.5k Fine for Climbing Road Signs

Some Malaysians are taking “anything for the gram” too far. The latest social media trend of posing while climbing or hanging onto road signs has now drawn the attention of local authorities.

DBKU Labels the Act as “Immoral” and “Dangerous”

The Kuching City North Hall (DBKU) in Sarawak has strongly condemned the act, describing it as both disrespectful and unsafe.

In a statement released on November 12, DBKU reminded the public that any act of vandalism, including pasting stickers or posters on road signs without permission, violates the Local Authorities (Cleanliness) By-laws, 1999.

If convicted, offenders can face fines of up to RM1,500, and repeat offenders could be fined up to RM3,000 or face nine months’ imprisonment for each additional offence.

“Following the disrespectful and indecent actions by the individual involved, DBKU will file a police report for further investigation under laws relating to public order,” the statement added.

Public Urged to Respect City Property

DBKU emphasized that such behavior is a violation of public etiquette and civic responsibility. It urged all residents and visitors to respect public facilities and maintain good manners to ensure Kuching City remains clean, safe, and comfortable for everyone.

The council further stressed that these acts not only endanger individuals but also tarnish the city’s image.

Netizens React to the Trend

While some netizens found humor in the trend, others agreed with DBKU’s stance. Many pointed out that climbing on road signs for photos isn’t just reckless but could easily lead to serious injuries.

Others expressed frustration, saying that people often forget basic respect for public spaces just to go viral online.
