Double Holiday Clash: No Extra Day Off for Malaysia Day and Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday

In Malaysia, when public holidays fall on a weekend, they’re usually moved to the nearest weekday (typically Monday) as a replacement day off.

But what happens when two public holidays fall on the same weekday?

This year, Malaysia Day and the birthday of Prophet Muhammad SAW (Maulidur Rasul) both fall on September 16, a Monday. However, despite what Google Calendar suggests, there won’t be an extra day off on Tuesday, September 17.

The Cabinet, Constitution, and Intergovernmental Relations Division of the Prime Minister’s Department confirmed that there won’t be an automatic replacement public holiday for this overlap.

The reason lies in the Holiday Act 1951 [Act 369], which doesn’t allow for an automatic replacement holiday when two public holidays coincide on the same working day.

However, the government can decide to designate another day as a public holiday if they find it necessary.

So, should the government give us another day off for one of these overlapping holidays?
