Four Premises Ordered To Close After Rat Droppings Found In The Kitchen

Four George Town Premises Shut Down Over Rat Droppings and Dirty Kitchens
GEORGE TOWN – Health officers from the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) have shut down four premises in George Town. The enforcement came after they discovered rat droppings, dirty kitchen equipment, and signs of contamination during a hygiene inspection.
The closures followed By-law 38(1) of the Food Establishment By-laws MPPP 1991, which allows MBPP to act when hygiene standards are not met.
Officers closed three restaurants and one grocery store last Tuesday. The shutdown will remain in effect until August 4.
Rat droppings were found not just in the kitchen, but also on food display racks. Inspectors also observed food preparation areas and storage spaces that were poorly maintained. Several pieces of kitchen equipment were left dirty or exposed to contamination.
Grease Trap Negligence Results in Fine
In a separate case, MBPP fined another business for letting food waste flow into a public drain. The outlet failed to maintain its grease trap, causing spillage. This action was taken under Section 47(1) of the Roads, Drains, and Buildings Act 1974 (Act 133).
Such violations not only harm the environment but also endanger community health.
Officers Checked Licensing and Food Handler Status
During the same operation, officers reviewed business licenses and checked whether workers were locals or foreigners. They also verified the typhoid vaccination status of food handlers.
MBPP advised all operators to prioritize cleanliness, especially in kitchen and food preparation areas.
“Food business owners must always put hygiene first to ensure consumer safety,” MBPP said in a statement.
The council confirmed that it will continue to conduct surprise inspections. Its goal is to make sure every food business in Penang follows the required hygiene and safety guidelines.
