Malaysian Man Detained After Using Illegal Route to Visit Secret Wife in Indonesia

Detained While Returning From Illegal Sea Route

A Malaysian man’s attempt to discreetly return home after visiting his secret second wife in Medan, Indonesia, ended in detention after authorities intercepted an unregistered boat off the coast of Selangor.

The 46-year-old lorry driver was detained on Monday, 26 January, after being found aboard a fibreglass boat travelling through illegal maritime routes commonly referred to as “backdoor” passages.

Passport Held By First Wife

According to reports, the man admitted to using illegal sea routes because his passport is currently held by his first wife, who is unaware of both his second marriage and his repeated trips to Indonesia.

He revealed that he secretly married a second wife about a year ago after meeting her in Rawang and has been travelling to Medan every four to five days to visit her. The woman is reportedly five months pregnant.

RM1,100 Paid For Each Illegal Trip

The man claimed the illegal travel arrangement was facilitated by a syndicate operating cross-border sea routes, with each trip costing him RM1,100.

He described the journey as physically exhausting, involving long hours in darkness, limited food, and uncomfortable conditions. Despite the risks, he continued using the route due to his inability to travel legally.

Interestingly, the illegal route was reportedly suggested by his second wife.

Boat Intercepted Off Sabak Bernam

The fibreglass boat was intercepted by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Selangor at approximately 12:30 AM, about 1.5 nautical miles southwest of Bagan Nakhoda Omar, Sabak Bernam.

Selangor Maritime Director Captain Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh confirmed that the boat was unregistered and operated by a 36-year-old Myanmar national.

26 Undocumented Passengers On Board

In addition to the Malaysian man, authorities discovered 26 undocumented Indonesian passengers onboard, including 17 males, one of whom was a five-year-old child, and nine women.

All individuals were detained for further investigation under immigration and maritime laws.
