Family Ropes Off Grave of UPSI Student Nurly Sahirah to Prevent Superstition

Family Takes Action After Grave of UPSI Student Attracts Disturbing Attention

The family of Nurly Sahirah Azman, a Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) student who tragically died in a road accident on June 9, has cordoned off her grave to prevent inappropriate behaviour and superstitious practices.

The incident took place along the East-West Highway (JRTB) near Tasik Banding, and her burial site is located at the Islamic Cemetery in Kampung Gong Pasir, Kerandang, Besut.

During a visit to the site, reporters saw her two brothers and another family member installing a rope barrier around the grave at around 6:30 PM. They also planted trees and decorated the area with white stones to enhance the resting place.

Preventing Inappropriate Behaviour at the Grave

Speaking to the press, Mohd Najmuddin Azman, 28, the victim’s older brother, said the family was left with no choice but to act.

“This is a preventive measure to avoid improper or superstitious activities around Nurly’s grave,” he explained.

He urged visitors to respect the boundary by staying outside the cordoned area and offering prayers from a distance.

Najmuddin also noted that the family will conduct regular patrols of the site, as visitors have been consistently flocking to the grave since the tragedy.

Initial Warnings Ignored, Stricter Action Now in Place

Najmuddin revealed that prior to installing the rope, the family had already posted a notice warning visitors against inappropriate behaviour — including removing items or soil from the burial site.

“At first, we tried using just a notice, but this time we were left with no other choice but to take firmer action.”

Grave Soil Allegedly Taken by Visitors

The situation escalated after a viral Facebook post surfaced, alleging that some visitors had taken soil from Nurly’s grave to bring home. Even more disturbing were claims that the soil was being rubbed onto children’s faces, possibly as part of a belief in spiritual or supernatural benefits.

These claims sparked outrage and concern, prompting the family to act quickly to protect the dignity and sanctity of Nurly’s final resting place.
