Strong 7.8 Earthquake Hits Philippines, Tsunami Warning Issued

Strong quake shakes southern Philippines, triggers tsunami alerts

A powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck southern Philippines early Monday morning, sending shockwaves across multiple regions and triggering tsunami warnings along coastal areas. The quake caused panic among residents, with early reports confirming structural damage and at least one reported fatality as emergency teams rushed to affected zones.

Tsunami warnings issued across coastal regions

Tsunami alerts were quickly issued, warning that waves of up to 3 metres could hit parts of the Philippines, while smaller waves were possible in Indonesia and Malaysia. Authorities urged residents in coastal and low-lying areas to evacuate immediately to higher ground as a precaution while monitoring continued.

Philippines sits in high-risk seismic zone

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported the epicentre was near General Santos City in Mindanao, while the US Geological Survey recorded the quake at a similar magnitude. The country lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” making it highly vulnerable to earthquakes, volcanic activity, and tsunami threats.
