Customer Claims Squid Sold At Kota Kinabalu Market Had Fish Hidden Inside To Increase Weight
Unusual Discovery Made While Cleaning Squid At Home

A social media user has drawn attention online after claiming to have discovered something unusual inside squid purchased from Kota Kinabalu’s central market. According to the individual, they bought one kilogram of squid consisting of seven pieces during a recent visit to the market. However, while cleaning the seafood at home, they allegedly found that each squid contained one or two round scad fish hidden inside. The discovery quickly raised questions, with the customer expressing disbelief that the situation could have happened by coincidence.
Allegations Of Weight Manipulation Spark Public Anger

The customer alleged that the fish may have been intentionally inserted into the squid to increase the total weight and ultimately the amount paid by buyers. Since squid generally commands a much higher market price than round scad fish, the alleged practice could result in customers paying premium seafood prices for cheaper fish hidden within the product. The individual described the incident as deceptive and shared concerns that unsuspecting consumers could be affected. Following the post, many social media users voiced frustration and described the alleged tactic as a serious violation of consumer trust.
Calls For Investigation And Greater Consumer Awareness
Hoping to prevent similar incidents from affecting other shoppers, the customer publicly appealed for the matter to be investigated by the relevant authorities. In the post, assistance was sought from local leader Datuk Jamawi Jaafar, with calls for agencies including the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) to look into the allegations. The individual also claimed that other consumers had shared similar experiences, suggesting that the practice may not be an isolated case. The incident has since prompted renewed calls for stricter monitoring of wet markets and for consumers to inspect seafood purchases carefully before completing transactions.
