Syed Saddiq Proposes CCTV Installation in All Schools

Installing CCTV Is Not Expensive, Says MP

Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has proposed that the government allocate a special fund to equip all Malaysian schools with CCTV surveillance. The move comes after rising concerns over bullying, assault, and even murder involving students.

During the 2026 Budget debate in Parliament, Syed Saddiq emphasized that installing CCTV is not a major financial burden, with units costing between RM50 and RM200 each.

“I went shopping briefly at DIY. You can get a CCTV unit for RM50. If you want something more advanced with solar power, it’s RM200. If one school installs 20 CCTV units, imagine the impact,” he said.

10,000 Schools Could Be Equipped Affordably

He estimated that installing 20 cameras in each of Malaysia’s 10,000 schools would still be a manageable national expenditure.

“In Malaysia, we have about 10,000 schools. The overall cost isn’t that high. But even if it were, if it saves just one life, it’s a cost we must bear,” he added.

Syed Saddiq views the move as a preventive measure that is worth the investment, not just financially but also in protecting lives.

Dismantle Systems That Protect Bullies

The MP didn’t stop at CCTV. He also urged for the removal of systems that shield bullies, stating that school wardens, principals, and enforcement officers must be held accountable for any incidents of misconduct.

“We need to dismantle the support system for bullies. Just show me one case where an enforcer, a warden, or a principal was penalised. Usually, there’s none,” he said.

He stressed that when students are harmed, the school’s name should not be the priority—student safety should be.

Enforce ‘You Touch, You Go’ Policy

He also called for the government to strictly enforce the ‘you touch, you go’ policy, taking firm action against any form of student misconduct or violence.

This proposal follows a tragic incident on Wednesday, where a 16-year-old girl was fatally stabbed, allegedly by a 14-year-old boy at a secondary school.

Petaling Jaya District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Shamsudin Mamat, confirmed that the victim suffered multiple stab wounds, believed to have been inflicted with two sharp weapons.
