Pahang Fisheries Department director Roslan Abu Hasan confirmed that officers had been mobilised to the area to gather more information and verify the species. However, he made it clear that the department had not yet established whether the fish was actually a red-bellied piranha. This means the reported discovery remains a claim under investigation rather than a confirmed case of piranhas being present at Klau Dam.  

How Could A South American Fish End Up In Pahang?

That remains unknown because authorities have yet to confirm the species, let alone determine how it might have entered the dam. The red-bellied piranha, scientifically known as Pygocentrus nattereri, is native to South America and can naturally be found across countries including Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Paraguay and Argentina. The claim also sparked speculation online that exotic fish could potentially enter local waterways after being released by owners, but there is currently no evidence establishing that this happened at Klau Dam. According to the report, members of the piranha family cannot be imported, sold, kept or possessed alive in Malaysia without permission from the Director-General of Fisheries.
