Can’t Withdraw Money, So He Pulls Out A Machete? Sarawak Man Destroys 5 Bank Machines And Leaves Young Man Seriously Injured!
A 38-year-old man allegedly damaged five banking machines with a machete after failing to withdraw cash in Sarikei, Sarawak, on 1 November 2026. A 21-year-old man suffered serious hand injuries while attempting to intervene. The suspect later surrendered to police, who confirmed he tested positive for ketamine and benzodiazepines. Investigations remain ongoing under multiple legal provisions.
A Failed ATM Withdrawal Turned Into A Dangerous Midnight Rampage
An unsuccessful cash withdrawal allegedly triggered a violent incident in Sarikei, Sarawak, when a 38-year-old man attacked several banking machines with a machete. The incident occurred at approximately 12:05 AM on Sunday, 1 November 2026, at a bank along Jalan Masjid Lama. According to Sarikei district police chief Superintendent Aswandy Anis, preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect became furious after failing to withdraw money from an automated teller machine. Instead of leaving the premises, he allegedly damaged five banking machines, including two ATMs, two cash deposit machines and one cheque deposit machine. Police also revealed that the suspect admitted to being intoxicated at the time, raising further concerns about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Young Man Seriously Injured After Trying To Stop The Suspect
The situation became even more serious when a 21-year-old man attempted to stop the suspect at a nearby location. During the confrontation, the young man allegedly suffered severe injuries to his left hand after being struck with the machete. He was subsequently rushed to Sarikei Hospital for medical treatment. Following the attack, the suspect reportedly fled in a Toyota Hilux, driving against the flow of traffic before crashing into a road divider along Jalan Masjid Lama. The incident demonstrated how quickly an act of property destruction could escalate into a dangerous confrontation involving members of the public. Police later reminded Malaysians to prioritise their safety rather than attempting to confront armed individuals directly.
Suspect Surrenders To Police And Tests Positive For Two Drugs
After the incident, the 38-year-old suspect surrendered himself at the Sarikei Police Station. Officers subsequently seized a Toyota Hilux and a machete believed to have been involved in the case. Police confirmed that a urine screening test returned positive results for ketamine and benzodiazepines, although checks found that the suspect had no previous criminal record. Investigators are examining the case under Sections 427 and 326 of the Penal Code, Section 45(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. These provisions concern property damage, causing grievous hurt with a dangerous weapon, driving under the influence and drug-related offences. Authorities have urged the public to report dangerous incidents rather than putting themselves at risk by intervening.
