‘Not to Make Life Hard for the People’ – Terengganu to Ban Vapes Completely Starting 1st August

The Terengganu State Government has confirmed that a full ban on the sale and sponsorship of electronic cigarette products (vapes) will begin on 1st August. However, they emphasized that the decision is not intended to make life difficult for the people.

According to Harian Metro, the Chairman of the State’s Information, Dakwah, and Sharia Empowerment Committee, Dr. Muhammad Khalil Abdul Hadi, stated that this ban aligns with the Islamic principle of prevention and aims to protect the long-term health of the people.

He informed that the latest data from the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) shows that 41 cases of vape-related diseases (EVALI) have been reported up to 30th September 2024. The treatment cost for each patient is estimated to reach RM150,892.11, and if left unchecked, these costs could rise to RM368 million annually by 2030.

Among the worrying cases are hallucinations and lung damage in teenagers, which have been increasingly reported in government hospitals. He added, “Do we want to continue allowing this poison to be in the hands of our younger generation?”

This ban is also based on the maqasid al-shariah — which is to protect life, intellect, and lineage — as well as the state government’s responsibility toward its people.

For the vape business owners affected, the state government is also offering alternative opportunities through a scheme under the Yayasan Pembangunan Usahawan (YPU).

“I urge all levels of society – from parents, teachers, NGOs to law enforcement – to join us in making this effort a success,” he said.

Previously, Terengganu had announced the enforcement of the vape ban on all products starting 1st August 2025, making it the first state to fully implement a vape ban in Malaysia
